Home Town Videos...

The ballerinas love to watch "Hometown Videos." When they were younger we'd drag out the video camera for every special event. Most of the time, though, we'd either forget to charge the battery. Or the tape would be full. So we probably only have about ten actual videos. Eventually the camera got old. And embarrassing. As newer technology swept us by. And I became more interested in photographing the special moments rather than videotaping them.

But now, when I look back at these old tapes. (Yes. They are still on mini-VHS tapes. Luckily, we still have a dual VHS/DVD player to play them on.) I get wistful. I love hearing their little voices. Watching them toddle around the house with the little plastic shopping cart for support. And catching a glimpse of my dad cooking. Or my mom singing "Happy Birthday." Totally off-key. Just like the rest of us.

So, I'm here to ask you all. Do you take videos? If so, what are you using these days? I have the ability to capture video with my DSLR, but I've only used that feature maybe twice. And the damn SD card was full before BB actually danced for the first time en pointe. So I'm not sure if there's an easier way. Also, if you do capture your videos on SD cards, do you transfer them to something else? A DVD? Or is that totally old skool by now also?

And a quick reminder. Tomorrow is January 10th. It's the first Ten on Ten of 2012. C'mon...Let's do this!

Girl, you're on a roll. It's so good to see you posting so often! The new year and the 365 project have really put a fire under your pot. I too still only have a camcorder with Mini-VHS tapes. I keep thinking I need to get a newer model DVD player, but mine still works fine and someday I'm going to have to transfer all the tapes, so what's a few more right?! I've taken quite a few videos on the camera, but when the computer crashed, I learned the hard way that my off site backup does not automatically backup videos. It will do it, but you have to manually tell it to, which I did not, so I lost a lot of those videos, but thankfully Michael usually had the camcorder going at the same time, so hopefully there is still something recorded somewhere. I remember one night when my little guy was about 3, he climbed in bed with us in the middle of the night and just started talking away. I grabbed the camcorder and let it roll. Michael asked what the heck I was doing because it was pitch black, and I told him I was recording his little voice because I never wanted to forget how sweet it sounded. Anyways, if you figure out a good way to bring yourself into the 21st century with all this, would you let me know what to do so I can join you!

I use my iPhone for video! I swear that thing is a memory-saver. Without it I would have so many fewer photos and NO video.

Thanks for the 10 on 10 reminder. I'm at work all day so I'll have to get creative... ;)

hi kim ... i'm at least comforted to know that i'm not alone - your story of the dslr taking over is my story exactly and now i'd love to have more video footage into our memories ... the good news is that my older daughter has a flip and it's been a fabulous savior at times ... i'll definitely be back to read everyone's input on this subject!!

How sad is this...I never take videos. Your post has me thinking, yes the wheels are turning! lol
I have always just taken photos. It's about time I change it up a bit.

I don't have any way to take a video. The kids all can on their point and shoots and I have occasionally used one of those. I've thought about buying a flip camera or something but I doubt I would use it.
