In Over My Head

It seems like everyone has a talent. Something they're naturally good at. Maybe it's singing, or swimming, or selling. Everyone has "their thing." Right?

So how come I don't have a "thing?" I like a lot of "things." I ping around from "thing" to "thing." But nothing seems to stick. There isn't one "thing" that grabs me and holds on. Hence, the title of this blog.

One of the "things" I like to dabble in is sewing. I like the IDEA of sewing. I love seeing all the fabulous things people can whip up with a sewing machine. I can sew simple things like curtains. Things with a straight seam. I wish I was better at it.

So what did I do? I went ahead and volunteered to help with the costumes at the Big Ballerina's studio. I wrote on my volunteer form, "I can make....SIMPLE things. I'm good with the glue gun. But I don't think I'm capable of sewing beautiful costumes."

I guess reading is not the people-in-charge-of-the-costume-department's "thing." If it was, I surely would not have been sent home with this...

See that stack of white fabric on the right hand side of the Big Ballerina's sewing space? That is a stack of fabric that is supposed to be whipped up into six tunics. By Saturday. Tunics that require gathering, setting sleeves and elastic. No glue gunning required.

See that stack of sewing books on the left hand side of the Big Ballerina's sewing space? That is my attempt at sewing these tunics. Off to the library I went. It's what I do. I research. I gather. I procrastinate. I guess that's my "thing."

What can a person do who is good at researching, gathering and procrastinating? hmmm...maybe write a blog?

If you don't hear from me before Saturday, now you know why. And if the Big Ballerina dances naked in the upcoming Sleeping Beauty performance, you'll know why. Too bad they're not doing the Emperor's New Clothes.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting! Your post is great. Good luck on the costumes, I'll cross my fingers for you. ( Don't want to see any naked ballerinas).

Before I got to the last sentence, I thought "The Emporers New Clothes"! LOL. I feel for you. I too am great at the research, the gathering and then the procrastination. I too can make some great Halloween costumes from felt and a glue gun. So when you figure out what you're going to be, can you drop me a line. I might need a little direction. :)

I look forward to seeing your magnificent photos of the spectacular tunics.

-Peace

I swear we might have been separated at birth. Although, you can at least sew a straight stitch. I haven't even gotten that far! I do have the machine sitting in my basement. "One day" is my mantra. You'll do it - I know you can!

Oh Kim I am sure you will do great with this "assignment"! As you know I cannot sew (it's the straight line thing!!). Best of luck on this! hugs, Cathy

hilarious! well, maybe not so much for you ;-) I think i'm so humored b/c your 'things' are also my 'things': researching, gathering, and procrastinating!! I laughed out loud at that one - it's me to a T!

Never with sewing as the thing that I promised, but I have sooooooo been where you are right now - hang in there, girl!

And, btw, photography is your 'thing' - hello??! ps - thanks for watching the video tonite- pretty moving, huh?

HAHAHA!!! You nailed it! BlogLand is the home of researchers, gatherers, and procrastinators!

BTW, those of us who like to "ping" are called dabblers. Takes one to know one ;)

I've done the same thing. I had to do some western dresses for adults in a play. I stressed over them as long as I could. Then I put my big girl panties on and just did it. The stressing over it was worse than actually sewing them. I'm sure you'll feel the same way. Good luck!

You totally crack me up. I swear I could have written that same post. I collect fabric and sewing books and it sure looks like I know what I'm doing. I'm afraid of my sewing machine. It just sits there staring at me saying..."when are you going to learn how to use me??" Good luck and I'll be tuning in to see how you make out!

Holy shit, girl.

I'll pray for you. And pray that your girls don't have to perform burlesque at such a tender age.

I don't think I have a "thing" that has taken over my soul. Although photography is about as close as I've come. I think that if I had a bit more time it would cross that line. So, I'd say it's my #1. Crochet is on the list. Sewing is, but I find it hard to squeeze in. Crochet is easy to pick up and put down. Sewing is something that I need a chunk of time to get into. But I do love it when I get "in the zone".

That second book from the top of the pile is excellent. I've relied upon it a lot.

WTF? I'd be sending those suckers right straight back from whence they came.

You'll, no doubt, wind up with an Oscar for Best Costume Design in a Drama.

Remind me to never tell anyone I can sew because I'd so be up a creek without a paddle. For some reason thought, I just have a feeling you're going to pull this off, and pull it off well at that. You just seem like that kind of person. And you know on this day my heart is with you....

Hysterical! I don't know what I would do! Of course the closest I've ever gotten to a sewing machine is when my Mom used to make our Halloween costumes and I got to step on the peddle every once and a while. Is that what it is called? A peddle? Am I spelling that right? lol

I'm sure they will be amazing! You are going to wow the socks off of everyone! Who knows, they might even let you take a bow at the end of the show!

It's called trial by fire. By the time it's over you'll be considered an expert. Good for you for taking on what may seem like the impossible. You go girl!
