Why Are You So Dressed Up Today?

Way back (ok, eight months ago) when I started this blog I talked about how I have dresses in my closet with the tags still on. Dresses that I LOVE, but don't wear. Mainly because I'm tired of the comment, "Why are you so dressed up today?" And that question makes me uncomfortable.

As a stay-at-home mom, it's easy to get in a rut of jeans and a t-shirt. It's comfortable. It's easily cleaned. You fit in with the crowd. Where it's safe. There's no worry that people will talk about you.

That you look like a hoochie.

That you don't know how to put together an outfit.

Or worse, you're too matchy-matchy.

But it gets old, and boring, to always wear the same "uniform" day in and day out.

My friend and I talk about this often during our morning workouts. We think other women look great when they wear bold necklaces. Or add a scarf to a basic outfit. Or wear cute shoes. But we feel self-conscious when we do it. We hate hearing, "Why are you so dressed up today?" Are these other women who wear accessories or dresses hearing the same questions? I'm so curious.

How about you? Do you wear dresses casually? Statement necklaces? Scarves? Funky shoes? Or are you a "uniform" girl too?

Hmmm...I've never thought about this.

My clothes are pretty simple, but I try to have one fun accessory going on with my outfit. I am not always successful, but I feel so much better when I add a little something.

If I step it up a notch further, my kids definitely notice. I hear, "where are you going", and sometimes, "you look beautiful, mommy".

I've tried to vary it enough that I don't get asked as much anymore. I don't wear skirts or dresses in the winter much - usually jeans. But I vary the tops, shoes & accessories. Most of the time it is a long sleeve T and comfy shoes but other times it's a blouse or funky sweater w/ low heels. If you do it for awhile, go back & forth that is, then people will eventually stop asking the question after you answer "nothing special." or just "Thanks!". I am sure you always look great - even in jeans & a t!

TOTAL uniform. Jeans, bright colored shirt that just peeks out at the collar from underneath a black fleece. I have roughly three of each item and they rotate around the laundry. Horribly uninventive.

I totally thought of this post when I bought all of those goodies yesterday! ;)

I did not notice the price on the city signs, I'm sorry. I have seen them around blogland though...I'm sure you could find something inexpensive out there...good luck!

I wear dresses and scarfs and sort=of funky shoes (not trainers anyway). Dressing up a bit makes me happy. Though there are plenty of days when I wear the traditional SAHM uniform of jeans and a t-shirt.
